Maricopa County Assessor’s Legal Class Verification Program
2018 NACo Achievement Award
Assessor Paul D. Petersen and his team have saved the State of Arizona over $38 million by making sure that our property records are up to date. The State of Arizona invests in a homeowner's rebate to ease property taxes for people living in their own homes, but does not intend to subsidize properties being used for rental purposes or secondary homes. Our Legal Class Verification Program reaches out to owners of homes that we think are being used as rental or secondary homes and determines whether they still qualify for the homeowner's rebate.

Residential Desktop Technology Recanvassing Program
In 2013, Assessor Paul D. Petersen initiated a project to re-canvass all residential property in Maricopa County with up-to-date information on changes made to existing property. Without a statutory mandate to visually inspect residential properties, many parcels have not been updated since the 1950's. By developing a truly state-of-the-art canvassing methodology and using a new-to-market software package (Assessment Analyst – AA) developed by Esri Canada, our appraisers can be accurate within one-inch margin of error using sophisticated aerial and street-front imagery delivered to their desktop computers. Sending appraisers on site would take up to a minimum of 40 minutes -- excluding travel time from the Assessor's main office. Following IAAO standards, appraisers use AA to accurately review and measure a parcel at their desks in an average of just 11 minutes.
